Dublin Southside
The southside of Dublin is considered to be middle class and a bit more snobbish than the working class image of Dublin Northside, though that is not always the case, see Ballyfermot for example. The southside of the city includes the embasy area of Ballsbridge, but also areas like Jobstown and Ballyfermot which are a world apart.
In general the middle class areas span both sides of the city, the current Prime Minister Bertie Ahern lives in the northside - where he currently trys to hang onto his working class background.
Northsiders and southsiders try to wind each other up about where they live, from an outside perpective these things make little difference. The main things that make a difference if where to live, where to go out, where to work - and in general the southside wins in these areas due to the less troublesome travel, however that is greatly dependent on where you work.
To some, especially those from outside Dublin, the Southside of Dublin is presumed to be the area within Dublin’s county borders bounded to the north by the River Liffey. To native Dubliners, however, the socio-cultural particularities of the ’southside’ and ’southsiders’ are not contained within this artificial construct. When ’southside’ is used as an adjective or pronoun, it is used, rightly or wrongly, as a term referring to an attitude within or prejudice about Dublin’s middle and upper classes.
Dublin Southside Districts
Rathmines - very close to the city centre, walking distance. A great place to live in Dublin, safer than most areas, easy to rent, but more expensive due to the convenience of the area and closeness to the city centre.
Ballyfermot - close the the city centre, however it has more than its fair share of drug, alcohol, and crime problem. It is not a desired area to live and was first built to house families from Dublin’s slum clearances.
Ranelagh -
Ballsbridge -
Rathgar -
Terenure -
Tallaght - it has some very good areas and some truly bad areas. Good access to the Dublin Mountains, however the access to the city centre is not good, travel to the city will take at least an hour in the mornings.
